Having a professionally-known-as name on your Deed Poll

If you have a name that you use for professional or work purposes and you intend continuing to use that name after your name change, we can include your professional name on your Deed Poll.  By doing this, record holders (i.e. government departments, companies and organisations) that you show your Deed Poll to will be made aware that although you are changing your legal name, you will continue to use your professional name for professional purposes only (for all other purposes, you will be using your new name).  Furthermore, you can ask HM Passport Office to include your professionally-known-as name on your passport’s observations page (the page next to the personal information page).  This is very useful if, for example, someone books you a flight in your professional name (you don’t need to get the ticket changed) or if you have to produce ID in your professional name.  To fully understand how our service works, please read the following examples:

Example 1
Miss Katherine Smith is getting married and will be changing her name and title to Mrs Katherine Rose Smith-Jones.  At work, she has established a good reputation with clients and colleagues in the name Katie Smith.  Therefore, she intends to continue using her maiden name for work purposes only.  She also feels it appropriate to use the title Ms at work.  Therefore, Katie will request her professionally known-as-name to be Ms Katie Smith.

Dr James Matthew Smith is the Senior Scientific Officer at BioChem Engineering PLC and he is changing his name to James Matthew Smith-Jones.  At work, he is known as Dr Jamie Smith and has established a good reputation in his academic field.  He therefore intends continuing to use the name and title Dr Jamie Smith for work purposes and he will request his professionally known-as-name to be Dr Jamie Smith in his capacity as Senior Scientific Officer at BioChem Engineering PLC.
